New findings suggest that the Covid-19 may increase the risk of rare vision-threatening blood clots. The researchers studied nearly half a million Covid 19 patients to see the development of clots in the vein or arteries of the retina. Over the six months after initialization, 65 individuals reported retinal vein occlusion. Though the numbers were low, the data show a significant increase of 54% in comparison to pre-Covid times.

Retinal artery clots were 35% more common during Covid 19 and have occurred in patients with other comorbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The researchers also added that the clot risks were not associated with the severity of the infections and further studies are required to gather concrete evidence to confirm Covid 19 as the cause of the retinal clots.
